Delving into Lent: A season of Reflection, Renewal, and Service

For those who have experienced the liturgical traditions of churches like the Catholic, Lutheran, or Episcopalian denominations, the season of Lent is a familiar, deeply significant period. However, for those new to this observance, Lent offers a rich opportunity for spiritual growth.

Lent is a 40-day period of solemn observance, mirroring the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness after his baptism, enduring fasting and temptation by Satan (Matthew 4:1-11). It commences on Ash Wednesday, a day marked by the symbolic imposition of ashes, and extends for six weeks, excluding Sundays, culminating on Maundy Thursday or the evening before Easter Sunday.

This season is characterized by a call to introspection and spiritual discipline. Many Christians choose to engage in acts of self-denial, such as abstaining from certain foods, social media, or entertainment, as a means of focusing on their relationship with God. This practice of fasting, however, is not merely about deprivation. It serves as a tangible reminder of our dependence on God and a way to create space for deeper prayer and reflection.

The somber nature of Lent, particularly the emphasis on repentance and acknowledging our mortality, is rooted in biblical wisdom. As Ecclesiastes 3:20 reminds us, "All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return." This recognition of our human frailty invites us to confront our shortcomings and seek God's forgiveness.

Yet, Lent is far from a season of mere penitence. It is fundamentally a journey of spiritual transformation. It is a time to cultivate a deeper love for God and to extend that love to others. The early Church Father, John Chrysostom, eloquently emphasized this connection between inner reflection and outward action, stating, "No act of virtue can be great if it is not followed by advantage for others. So, no matter how much time you spend fasting, no matter how much you sleep on a hard floor and eat ashes and sigh continually, if you do no good to others, you do nothing great." Therefore, acts of service and compassion are integral to the Lenten experience. This season encourages us to look beyond ourselves and to actively engage in acts of kindness, charity, and reconciliation.

To support your Lenten journey, valuable resources are available. BIOLA University offers a comprehensive online resource, providing insightful reflections and guidance. Additionally, downloadable devotionals can serve as a daily companion, offering structured prayers and meditations.

At Summit Ridge, our hope is that this Lent season will be a transformative period for you. May it be an opportunity for profound reflection, spiritual growth, and a renewed commitment to serving others in response to the immeasurable sacrifice and boundless love demonstrated by Jesus Christ. May you find deeper meaning in your faith and experience the joy of a closer walk with God.
